Ajax, Lower and Upper 4.0 4.5

Both Lower and Upper Ajax are your basic 4x4 rock crawling Jeep trails in the bottom of a wash.  Not much for scenery but good for wheelin'.  Quite challenging.

Lower Ajax (4.0) crosses back and forth across the access road a number of times, so there are many chances to escape if there is a problem.  Extra credits can increase the difficulty to any desired degree.  Using the access road can decrease the difficulty.

The end of Lower Ajax is the beginning of Upper Ajax (4.5), so well equipped vehicles (not the one shown at right) can simply continue up the wash. The split is at an old rusty water tank, where Woodpecker Road shows on the map.

Lesser vehicles can simply take the access road, high above Upper Ajax, and watch the vehicles doing that one.  Upper Ajax is also in the bottom of a wash, but it is somewhat more difficult.

Purists will tell you that Upper Ajax stops when it reaches
1A Cottonwood - Telegraph 2.5, and that the continuation on the other side of the road is called Upper Ajax Extension.  I have combined the two into one trail.

There is a GPS - gpx track at the bottom of the page.

The Ajax Mill processed ore from many mine shafts in the area.  You can see it where Upper Ajax crosses the main road.
