Bench Overlooks and Sego 2.0

Start at Crescent Junction on I-70, climb a Jeep trail up to a bench with 2 nice overlooks then descend down to Sego Ghost Town and Freemont rock art.
The first overlook is probably the best overlook.  The track shows a loop at the end, but you can simply stay to the right if you do not want to climb the rock on the left.

The second overlook is a bit better if you go to the end of the track, but is still nice if you quit at the first edge of the bench.

There is a GPS - gpx track at the bottom of the page.

Drop down into Thompson and Sego Canyons and visit the remains of Sego.  See Legends of America for a full description.

Sego got its start in the early 1890s when an affluent farmer/rancher named Harry Ballard discovered coal on land adjacent to his ranch.  The mine was up and down until it finally closed in the 1950s.

Not much left today.  Ruins of the store, and perhaps a dwelling, are about all that remain.

Perhaps a house?
Railroad bridges washed out during flash floods.

There is a cemetery downstream from Sego.

There is nice rock art, as well as a privy, below Sego.  Be sure to look around.
