Bowl and Matterhorn 2.5

This run combines The Bowl Trail and Matterhorn Trail, then throws in the White Star 2 Mine.
Travel up the Weiser Valley below Weiser Ridge.

This trail is 20 miles long and will take a short half day.  Nothing is harder than 2.5 and most is 2.0 or GP.  A fun and enjoyable trip.

The trail is described south to north, but it can be run in either direction.

There is a GPS - gpx track file at the bottom of the page.

The first 6 miles of this route is a paved highway.  Turn north and head uphill on The Bowl Trail.  Spend quite a bit of time up on a low ridge with nice views, and an occasionally foray down into a wash.

Watch for a small arch on the left.

All of the Bowl Trail is rated 2.0, but there is an optional obstacle called The S Turn that is certainly higher than that.  Both The S Turn and the go-around are included in the gpx track.

"The Bowl" is just that, a bowl, 1.25 miles wide and .75 miles front to back.

Matterhorn Trail was named for a peak thought to look like the Matterhorn in Europe.  That may be a bit of a stretch, but you can see a resemblance.  There are a couple rocky stretches that approach a 2.5 rating, so it is rated that to be safe.

Weiser Valley is not a riot of color, but we did see one spot of interest.

Bighorn were interested in us, and we returned the favor.

White Star 2 was a gypsum mine.  There is a barbed wire fence with signs warning people to stay out of the dangerous mine.  Notice that the upper layer is collapsing in almost every location.  Heed the signs!

Continue north and end the trip on I-15.
