Ed Lamb Point 3.5

A short run where you can skirt Coral Pink Sand Dunes, visit Sand Spring, run a somewhat challenging Jeep trail and enjoy the view from a nice overlook.

This trail is 3.5 - 4 hours, including lunch.

There is a trail from this one into Coral Sand Dunes but we did not do it.

PLEASE NOTE:  This trail is rated 3.5 only if it is run in a clockwise direction, and then it is a weak 3.5 based on a single obstacle.  I rate it a 3.0 if done counterclockwise.

There is a GPS - gpx file at the bottom of the page.

The first part of the trail is mostly sand and is quite mellow.  It is fenced to prevent people from entering the Dunes in this area.

Sand Spring is a natural spring on the edge of the dunes.

The remainder of the trail alternates between sand and ledges.  There are a few areas with large pine trees, but most areas have small trees and low brush.

There are areas where brush will hit the side of your vehicle.  There are long stretches, especially on the eastern leg, where there is no room to pass.  Just hope you do not meet another vehicle because someone will have to back up.

Most ledges are rated 2.5 - 3.0.  Most have several possible lines of attack.

The most difficult section of trail is the hill climbing up the south side of Water Canyon.  We rated the trail a weak 3.5 if run in this direction.  Running counterclockwise would have you going downhill and would be rated 3.0.

There is a spur to Ed Lamb Point from the south end of the loop.  Great views as you travel along the ridge.

The point is a great spot to have lunch with a view - See opening photo.  Interesting pyramid shaped formations.
