Four Peaks 2.0

This is a very popular Jeep trail that traverses the Mazatzal Mountains north of Four Peaks Wilderness.  It offers spectacular views of Roosevelt Lake as well as the lower Salt River Lakes and the Mogollon Rim.
Four Peaks itself is in a wilderness area, so cannot be driven to, but is very visible from this trail.

This run can be made either way, but is more scenic from west to east, and that is how it is described here.  Begin north of Mesa on Highway 87 and end northwest of Globe on Highway 188.  The western slope is somewhat washed and rutted and requires that your vehicle have reasonable clearance, but certainly not 4WD.  The eastern slope is well maintained.

There is a GPS - gpx track at the bottom of the page.

The west side begins along The Rolls OHV area, so expect heavy traffic for the first few miles.  The west side is an enjoyable climb but does not offer any spectacular views.

Pass through Brushy Basin before making the final climb to the ridge.

There are side roads going both directions along the high ridge.  This track takes you on one south of the main road to a viewpoint with a large parking area - perfect for lunch.  You can see Roosevelt Lake to the east and Brushy Basin/Verde River drainage to the west.

We do not know if this electronics tower is still being used.

The views dropping down the eastern side are fantastic.  The circle road around the small peak is for large vehicles that cannot make the  very sharp turn not quite shown in the photo.

There are several small communities along Tonto Creek above Roosevelt Lake.
