Hackberry Creek 3.0 - 4.0

Hackberry Creek is one of our favorite trails.  It can be run as either a 3.0 or a 4.0 rated trail.  Nice overlooks of Devil's Canyon, great wheeling and lots of interesting rock formations.

This trail can be run many different ways, as all roads are driveable in all directions.  Arrows on the map show suggestions for both 3.0 and 4.0 runs.

The description below will mostly detail the 4.0 run, with clarifications for the 3.0 run when necessary.

There is a GPS - gpx track at the bottom of the page.  This file contains one track showing both the 3.0 and 4.0 sections, same as the map at the bottom of this page.

One did not make it
Leave US 60 on the Magma Mine Road and follow the GPS track south through the exploration and drilling area for the proposed Resolution Copper Mine.  This improved section of the trail is used by rock climbers heading for hoodoos near overlook 2.

Drop down a hill into Hackberry Creek at Cattle Pond Intersection.  You can go any direction from here at a future time, but the track will continue south along Hackberry Creek.  This 3.0 section of trail has nice rock formations and several challenging sections of road.

At the southernmost part of this leg you will come to Picnic Table Intersection.  Turn left and continue to Overlook 1.

People doing the 3.0 run can go from Picnic Table Intersection to Overlook 1 and return to the intersection without encountering a 4.0 section.

Turn north down Powerline Hill, an interesting combination of boulders and a challenging climb/descent.

Continue north over Boulder Hill.  This spot has a continually changing field of boulders at the bottom and a number of moving boulders on ledges at the top.

Overlook 2 has many hoodoos popular for rock climbing.  This overlook can also be reached from Cattle Tank Intersection by people doing the 3.0 run.

The trail between Cattle Tank Intersection and US 60 is a very interesting 4.0 part of the run.
