Hualapai Mountains 3.0

Ride the crest of the Hualapai Mountains and visit historic mines along the way.

This is a long and bumpy trail.  Plan on at least a 9 hour round trip from Kingman if you visit the three mines featured on this page.  Both ends of this track are either well graded or paved, but the center 27 miles are low range 4WD.

We did the trail south to north but it can be done either way.

Copper World Mine is at the end of a right hand spur 15 miles into the trail.  The mine started in 1919 and was off and on until 1968.  See a full history.

There is a GPS - gpx track file at the bottom of the page.

Antler Mine is the first point of interest on the trail.  The mine was established in 1879 as the Vendetta Mine, later changed to Antler Mine when Antlerite was discovered.  This statement was published early in the life of the mine:  About twenty miles southeast of Yucca, on the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad, is located the Antler mine, recently purchased, along with others by the well-known mining firm of Phelps, Dodge & Co. The product is copper and silver.  Development work is now being pushed on this property, and a large body of ore of excellent grade has already been uncovered.  A branch railroad from Yucca Station to the mines is in contemplation, and reduction works will undoubtedly be built at the mine in the near future.  This district promises to be one of the most prosperous in Mohave County.  Source

The headrig is in good shape.  The shaft under the headrig seems to go down forever.

Head up Boriana Canyon after leaving Antler Mine.  First take the right hand spur to visit Copper World Mine then continue up the canyon to Boriana Mine.

The Boriana tungsten deposit was known prior to 1908 and produced comparatively little and was purchased by Harvey Klotsch and his son of Kingman. The mine was operated as the Yucca Tungsten Mine with production increasing when the price on tungsten rose to $125 per ton to support World War I.  The time between 1915 and 1919 marked one of the primary production periods of the mine and in 1918 it was one of Arizona's leading tungsten producers.  Also, during 1933-1937 it was the leading producer in Arizona and probably the second largest producer in the USA. Also operated 1951-1957 and 1979-1980.  Arizona Mining History

Boriana Mine
After the Boriana Mine you simply have to "keep on keeping on".  The remainder of the 4WD part is rocks, erosion and bumps with short intervals of so-so road in between.

A lot of rock photos, but I want to emphasize that it is slow and bumpy.

And yet another
The biggest part of the 4WD section is high on the sides and ridges of the Hualapai Mountains and the views are vast, if not spectacular.
