Monument Peak 2.5

Monument Peak is a distinctive needle visible from quite a distance.  It is one corner of the Colorado River Indian Reservation established in 1865.

This trail circles one side of the needle so you can see it from the back.  Spoiler:  It is more impressive from a distance.

This trail is heavily used by quads and side-by-sides.  They have caused a lot of whoop-de-dos in much of the trail and it is unpleasant in a Jeep.  Go slow and have patience.

​We went up the east side and returned on the west side, but it can be done either way.

Burros are everywhere in this area.  Populations are above the carrying capacity of the range and need to be managed more aggressively.  

This formation looks like a horse head.  A vivid imagination can make the horse's ear into a turtle's head and neck.

Circle around the monument until you come to this mine, then turn around and follow the western track back to a canyon in red sandstone.  This rock is very unusual for the area.
