Rat Creek 2.5

Rat Creek is a long ways from any other Jeep trails on the Silverton website, but it is an interesting area.  The trail is nice, but the Bachelor Historic Loop is the real highlight of the area.  Fabulous!

Start the Rat Creek run at the public bathrooms on the edge of Creede.  Travel up Rat Creek first.  This is the east side of the loop.  Drive to the Continental Divide then down Willow Creek and back to Creede.

This photo shows the lower portion of the trail.  It was taken in 2014, after the Spruce Bark Beetle had killed most of the spruce.

Lower east side

The middle section is open road along the Rat Creek Valley.  The very upper section is tundra up to the Continental Divide.  Be sure to take the short spur leading up to the Divide.

The trail is steep and loose dropping down into Willow Creek.  This is what causes the rating to be 2.5.  Everything else is GP or 2.0

Be sure to go to the Visitor Center for a brochure of the Bachelor Historic Loop. It is a passenger car tour.  Here is some of what you will see.
