Sand Hollow For Wimps 3.0

If you want to look over Sand Hollow, but cannot figure out how to do it while avoiding the difficult trails, this is the trail for you.  Great way to see many of the attractions without the serious bumps and grinds.
Sand Hollow is a great offroad area with many difficult trails.  It also has very scenic areas and interesting rock formations.  This track is a combination of several easier trails to give you a tour that can be done with most Jeeps - only one obstacle rises to a 3.0 rating, and that has a bypass.

The obstacle in the photo is an option along the track, but is not directly on the track.  We call this the "Stupidest Jeep Flop Ever".  No excuse - just a plain stupid mistake by not paying attention. Even a rookie knows to go straight up a ledge, not sideways. The only thing injured was my ego, and that was big time!

I called Dixie 4WD, a Jeep repair shop in town, and they came out to rescue us.  They got us upright, then proceeded to get oil out of the cylinders.  They ran into a problem so put it partly back together and we towed it into their shop.  It was ready before noon the next day.  Small crack in the fiberglass top and a broken tail light.  Amazing!

There is a GPS - gpx track file at the bottom of the page.

We started on the east end, just south of Grass Valley.  The first few miles are flat and featureless, but do offer some nice views.  There is soft sand along parts of this, but nothing compared to the dunes you will come to later.

Soft sand
Most of the flat area is sandy and smooth, but that changes as the road climbs up onto Sand Mountain.  There is broken ledge to drive over and minor ledges to climb over, but nothing very difficult.

Kissing Turtles is best seen from the east as you are following the track.  No need to drive down to it.

Flintstone House is right beside the track and is a fun place to crawl around.

A large area of dunes offers unlimited play opportunities.  We played it safe and followed tracks where others had already gone.

Crossing the dunes
After crossing the dunes there is a large flat area called Competition Hill Overlook.  Also a privy.  Top of the World is almost next door.  You will understand the name when you get there.

Hobbit House is another rock formation next to the road.

West Rim Boulevard offers great views by running along the top of the ridge.

The Toll Booths are where the Stupidest Jeep Flop Ever happened.  We flopped at the lowest toll booth.  This track goes through the highest toll booth.

Toll Booths
After the Toll Booths it is all downhill to the staging area.  The Funnel is the single obstacle that gives this run a 3.0 rating.  It is a sharp drop that can be a real bumper thumper.  It can be avoided by taking the bypass shown on the map and included in the gpx track.
